Susan Ellis

Teaching Artist • Soprano • Choral Conductor

Susan Ellis BMus, MMus, GradDipEd is an Australian soprano, choral conductor and teaching artist whose career spans professional performance, music education, creative development and community engagement.

A former member of Opera Queensland's Young Artist Program, Susan now works as a Teaching Artist with the company, performing, directing and facilitating learning experiences for audiences and communities throughout Queensland. Equally at home on the concert platform, in the rehearsal room or the classroom, she has built a career dedicated to connecting people through music.

Susan has lectured in voice at the Australian National University and the University of Southern Queensland and has taught music and voice across a wide range of educational settings. She is currently Principal Voice Teacher and coordinator of vocal and choral music at Moreton Bay College and Moreton Bay Boys' College in Brisbane. A sought-after presenter, she delivers professional learning programs, vocal workshops and performance practice sessions for students, teachers and large vocal ensembles throughout Australia.

As a performer, Susan's repertoire ranges from opera and oratorio to contemporary chamber music and newly commissioned Australian works. She performs regularly with Opera Queensland and Griffyn Ensemble and has appeared as a guest artist with orchestras across Australasia, including performances at Government House and international tours throughout Europe.

Susan is passionate about outreach and the belief that music should be accessible to everyone. Through projects with Opera Queensland, Griffyn Ensemble and community organisations, she has worked across Queensland, New South Wales and northern Scotland, supporting vulnerable and marginalised communities through creative engagement.

Her contribution to music education has been recognised through a national voice teaching award from the Australian Guild of Music and Speech, together with the CAPO Fellowship, Singapore Airlines Travelling Scholarship, Kornfeld Scholarship and a teaching fellowship supporting professional development at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

Whether performing, conducting, mentoring or creating new artistic projects, Susan is driven by a simple belief:

"Music touches us all."

Griffyn Ensemble.

This gives you an idea of my Griffyn Ensemble life. Old and New Griffyn's have come together to celebrate Michael Solli's life. Here are some videos he made of highlights of concerts. Some are a little bizarre!

La Traviata 2022

What a thrill to be a part of Opera Queensland's La Traviata produced for Opera Conference.

Directed by Sarah Giles, Conducted by Dane Lam.

First large scale production back from COVID.

It was wonderful to be singing with old friend Lorina Gore. (Violetta)

We had wonderul reviews. "The loyal servant Annina was given a sterling performance by Susan Ellis."
